100% Certainty Book Club |
Join Bethell Hospice and the Orangeville Public Library as we read and discuss books that explore themes of life, love and loss. Thursday, June 5 at 7 p.m., Mill Library At our spring session we will read and discuss The Friend by Sigrid Nunez, winner of The National Book Award When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: dogs are prohibited in her apartment building. After Hours Write Club |
The After Hours Write Club is a writing workshop facilitated by local author Anthony Carnovale. The group meets every other Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Mill Street Library. Our June Expert in the Library will recognize Senior's Month with a special presentation from author Alex Lam. Alex will speak to his latest work "Long Life: Mapping your Well-being with Purpose and Meaning". As we enjoy longer and healthier lives, we must care for our overall well-being and contemplate our purpose in this world. With increased lifespans comes the responsibility to utilize our time wisely and make the most of the gift of life. Thus, we must ask ourselves: What will we do with this newfound gift of time? Long Life is not just about extending lifespans, but also about enhancing the quality of life. It's about finding purpose and significance in our lives. It's about grasping the concepts of Wellness and Well-being to devise mindful strategies for achieving fulfillment and satisfaction. Alex will delve into the new definition of Wellness, the concept of self-care, and the application of a Well-being Competency Model, offering a platform for personal growth and self-discovery. Saturday, July 12, 2 p.m. - Mill Library - Exploring AI: Ethical Questions and Social Impacts What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)? Why are tech companies building it? What are the hopes people have for what this technology can accomplish? And how does AI perpetuate gender inequality? Many businesses, governments, and everyday citizens incorporate AI into various aspects of their work today. This presentation explores the risks and benefits of AI technology from the perspective of a researcher in Ethics and Feminist Philosophy. Please register to let us know you plan to attend. Amanda Narvali is currently working towards her Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Guelph. Her doctoral research is focused on the "Gendered Harms of Artificial Intelligence." Her work illuminates the harms of AI-generated pornography, the risks and benefits of data-based approaches to health and examines the promise of AI as a technology that can realize personalized medicine. Her philosophical interests include AI Ethics, Feminist Philosophy, Clinical Ethics, and Bioethics. Amanda holds an MA in Philosophy from Western University and a BA in Philosophy and Creative Writing from the University of Guelph.
